Aquatic Entomology
Aquatic Entomology is an aquatic macroinvertabrates taxonomic laboratory established in 1998. I started independent consulting after three years at the Washington Department of Ecology working with macroinvertabrates, both freshwater and marine. I constructed Ecology's reference collection of freshwater macroinvertabrates from Washington state. In 1995, I earned a B.S. in Environmental Studies from The Evergreen State College, after returning to college from a career in horticulture .
The following are the advantages of using macroinvertabrates to detect changes of biology in the stream.
Macroinvertabrate assemblages are good indicators of localized conditions.
Degraded conditions can be determined by presence or absence of tolerant and intolerant species.
Macroinvertabrates are abundant in the stream.
Sampling is relatively easy.
SERVICES
Sorting of freshwater benthic samples using a full or subsampled count.
Macroinvertabrate taxonomic identification of sample to the lowest standard taxonomic level used in bioassessment as established by NW Biological Assessment Workgroup.
Data recorded on hard copy and/or electronically delivered in MS Excel format .
Analysis using Tetra Tech's Ecological Data Application System, reporting abundance,
% functional feeding group, long lived, tolerant/intolerant, etc. and calculate IBI.
High quality processing of sample at very reasonable rates.
Follow strict standardized quality control for processing samples.
Outside taxonomist available for quality control of identified specimens for an additional fee.
Construction of reference collection upon request for a reasonable additional charge.
Located in Western Washington, can pick up and return samples.
Teach identification of aquatic insects to organizations.
Completed hundreds of stream samples on time for state government agencies, community organizations and tribes.
Certified by North America Benthological Society for Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera of Western North America for taxonomic identification.
